"And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure, because you protect me from the power of death. I have served you faithfully and you will not abandon me to the world of the dead." (Psalm 16:9-10)

MARY'S GLORIOUS ASSUMPTION |
ASSUMPTION
The holy Catholic Church celebrates this year's Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on Monday 15 August 2022. Some churches - like the Armenian Apostolic Church - celebrate the feast on the Sunday nearest to 15 August. The Assumption is a holy day of obligation when attendance at Holy Mass or church service. is compulsory for the Christians. . The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Christian feast observed by the Catholic Church, the Oriental Orthodox churches, Lutheran Churches, Parts of Anglican Communion, Eastern Orthodox Church, Church of the East, and the Reformed Orthodox churches.
The Assumption signifies the bodily taking up of Mary, the mother of Jesus into Heaven. This Assumption of the Virgin Mary is similar to the Ascension of Jesus Christ in the sense both of them went to heaven body and soul. But the Assumption differs from the Ascension in the sense that the former is passive wheras the latter is active. In other words, the Virgin Mary was assumed (taken up) to heaven by God whereas Jesus Christ ascended (went up) to heaven by himself - because he is God. .
DOGMA
In the truth of Psalm 16:9-10, Mary who said, to the angel of the LORD: “I am the Lord's servant, may it happen to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38), could not be left by the same LORD to rot in the grave or to remain in the land of the dead. For God to allow the body of Mary that was preserved from the original sin in order to conceive and to bear the Son of God (Revelation 12:1-2) would be a waste of divine resources and also an ingratitude to the greatest ever servant of God.
Catholic Church
The dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was formally established by the Catholic Church in 1950. A dogma is a principle laid down by the authority of the Church, as incontrovertibly true, and based on divine inspiration or revelation from the Scriptures. The Assumption of Mary is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church - the other three are the Immaculate conception, divine maternity, and perpetual virginity of Mary. In 1950 Pope Pius XII defined it in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus in the following: "We proclaim and define it to be a dogma revealed by God that the immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven." That declaration was based on the 1854 dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which established that Mary was conceived without original sin - and both have their foundation in the concept of Mary as the Mother of God.
Eastern Church
The teaching of the Assumption of Mary became widespread across the Christian world, having been celebrated as early as the 5th C and having been established in the East by Emperor Maurice by AD 600. John Damascene records the following: "St. Juvenal, Bishop of Jerusalem, at the Council of Chalcedon (451), made known to the Emperor Marcian and Pulcheria, who wished to possess the body of the Mother of God, that Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb, when opened upon the request of St. Thomas, was found empty; where from the Apostles concluded that the body was taken up to heaven."
MYTH
But to the unbelievers and non-Catholics the Assumption is mainly taken as a myth - an ancient story of supernatural imagination or just a false belief. Some hold that there is no biblical backin or a direct mention of "Assumption" as is the case with "Ascension" .(Luke 24:50-51). The views vary within Protestantism, with those theologically closer to Catholicism also believing in the Assumption. But most Protestants and new-age groups - also called pentecostal and prophetic churches - do not believe. Meanwhile, the Protestant reformer Heinrich Bullinger believed in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In his 1539 treatise against idolatry he expressed the belief that Mary's sacrosanctum corpus (sacrosanct body) was assumed into heaven by angels.

EVIDENCE
However, the doubts and oppositions, the Scriptures reveal irrefutable evidence of the Mary's Assumption in to heaven.
"Then a great and mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a woman, whose dress was the sun and who had the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was soon to give birth, and the pains and suffering of childbirth made her cry out. Then she gave birth to a son, who will rule over all nations with an iron rod. But the child was snatched away and taken to God and his throne." (Revelation 12:1-2, 5)
This Bible text shows very clearly that Mary was already crowned in heaven (Revelation 12:1) before the Nativity (Revelation 12:2) and the Ascension of Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:5). It is proof of the immaculate conception and the divine maternity of the Virgin Mary, which substantiate the dogma of the Assumption.
"The woman fled to the desert, to a place God had prepared for her, where she will be taken care of for 1,260 days. She was given the two wings of a large eagle in order to fly to her place in the desert, where she will be taken care of for three and a half years, safe from the dragon's attack." (Revelation 12:6,14)
This Bible text is both a figurative description and a mystical revelation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Let's get the symbols :
(1) The" desert" stands for heaven - "a place God had prepared for her". It is not the earthly desert, but it signifies the isolation of the Virgin Mary in the presence of God but without the rest of her offsprings (Revelation 12:17). Certainly, heaven is the only place that is "safe from the dragon's attack". For the dragon was cast down to the earth (Revelation 12:12).
(2) The number 1260 stands for "eternity". Thus 1+2+6+0 ÷ 9, which is the last and the biggest numeral., can means the "fullness" or the "end" of time.
(3) "The two wings of a larger eagle" stand for the Holy Spirit that came and took her up in to heaven.

BENEFITS
This biblical evidence of the Assumption confirms its dogma and so upholds the authority and power of the Church as the source of divine truth and the instrument of salvation. It consolidates the faith of the Church and increases the faith of the faithful. The evidence serves to justify and to clarify the Marian devotions, - so that the whole Church may practice them to benefit from the heavenly privileges of the Virgin Mary. For in the heavenly place the Virgin Mary accomplishes, even more, her role of intercession for sinners and for the poor (John 2:3-5). May the grace of Assumption bring you closer to the Blessed Virgin Mary for a deeper experience of God's love , through Jesus Christ, our Lord ; Amen.
