WHAT IS HIDDEN IN THE EUCHARIST

"He ordered the people to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. Everyone ate and had enough. Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left over." (Matthew 14:19-20)

Last Sunday, 19 June 2022,  the Church observed the solemnity of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ). In this post, Catholic Front opens the veil for us to see what is hidden in the Holy Eucharist - or the most Blessed Sacrament. Follow me! You will Know the truth and the truth will set you free (John 8 :32).

LAST SUPPER

At the Last Supper Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist to replace the slaughtered lamb of the Passover feast - which was the sacrifice to mark the freedom of the Jews from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 12:1-14). The Eucharist, then, is the sacrifice for the freedom of believers from sin and death (Luke 22:19-20). This institution of the Holy Eucharist was made effective and active when, on Good Friday, Jesus gave up his body and shed his blood on the cross for the redemption of the world. (John 19:16-18). Then on Easter Sunday he resurrected from the dead to restore believers to the glory of God (John 6:54).

HOLY EUCHARIST

SACRIFICE OF THE EUCHARIST

The Holy Eucharist,  being the sacrifice at  the Holy Mass (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) is, therefore, the living memorial of the  passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (John 19:17-18; 20:1-20). It is the means of our salvation (John 3:14-15) and the source of eternal life (Hebrews 10:19-20).

HOLY MASS

The Holy Mass fulfills and perpetuates the multiplication of the five loaves of bread and two fish (Matthew 14:19-20). During the consecration the bread and wine at the altar is transubstantiated (or changed by a mystical process) to the Body and Blood of Christ. (Luke 22:19-20). The loaves of bread were multiplied to feed hungry bodies but the Body of Christ is multiplied to feed hungry souls. That is why Jesus later told the crowd which was following him that they should not work for food that spoils but for food lasts lasts for eternity (John 6:27). And so with the loaves the multiplication was of quantities, but with the Eucharist  the multiplication is that of the graces - the unmerited gifts of the life of God.

An examination of the following symbols may help us to understand, deeper, the meaning and contents of the Eucharist.

FIVE LOAVES

The five (5) loaves of bread symbolize the crucified body of Christ, marked by his five precious wounds - two in his palms, two in his feet, and one in his side.

TWO FISH

The two fish symbolize the two thieves who were crucified beside Jesus on the Cross. The two thieves represent the whole humanity in need of salvation. The blood of Christ, which takes away sin, is poured out for everyone. The repentant thief represents the believers who have accepted (or will accept) Christ as their Savior, to receive his salvation. And the unrepentant thief represents unbelievers who have rejected (or will reject) Christ as Savior, and will be condemned.

12 BASKETS

The 12 baskets leftover symbolize the Bread of life (John 6:51) destined to all humanity - through the 12 tribes of Israel who were the beginning of the kingdom of God on earth. The purpose of eating this Bread of life is to give the believers eternal life, which is ertenal communion with the Blessed Trinity. This communion begins, here. In our earthly lives.

BLESSED TRINITY

The Blessed Trinity is symbolized by the number 3 (three persons in one God) which is the numerical reduction of 12. (ie 1+2=3). So, the 12 baskets of bread, leftover, prefigured the most Blessed Sacrament, which is always present in Tabernacle in the Catholic Church. And in this specimen of the Blessed Sacrament the Father, Son and Holy Spirit dwell in the Tabernacle and are alive and active in the  Church.

5.000 MEN

The 5000 men symbolize all those who are, and those who will be, baptized into Christianity. For the number 5 ie (5 + 0.+0+.0) which symbolizes the crucified Christ also symbolizes those who are baptized into his body. As the scripture says, we are baptized into the death and resurrection of Christ (Colossians 2:12-13). That is why in the ritual of baptism we are marked with the Cross on the forehead.

Now that we have uncovered the hidden treasure in the Holy Eucharist, let us go further to count its benefits to the Church.

FEAST OF ATONEMENT

The Eucharist (Holy Mass) is the feast of atonement. It is the memorial of Jesus's death on the Cross, which was an eternal settlement of the debt of the original sin (of Adam and Eve) and the reparation for the damages of all the sins of humanity.

FEAST OF REDEMPTION

The Eucharist (Holy Mass) is the feast of redemption. It is the sacr8ifice that frees the beneficiaries from the debts of, and the punishment for, sins  - already atoned for by the Crucifixion. It testifies to the infinite love of God that is backed by his mercy. The Holy Mass, therefore, takes away sins - the sins of the Church and the sins of the world (Leviticus 5:5-6; 17:11, Mathew 26:28). Our participation in the Holy Mass and / or mass offerings make us partakers and beneficiaries of the one-time sacrifice of Calvary. For this reason we are invited to regularly make offerings of Holy Mass for both the living (Ephesians 6:18) and for the souls of the dead (2 Macabees 12:43-45).

FEAST OF SALVATION

The Eucharist (Holy Mass) is the feast of salvation. This feast justifies or profits the beneficiaries and participants for the benefits of God's children, here on earth, and in heaven to come. These benefits include deliverance, healing, success, blessing and different types of graces.

FEAST OF RECONCILIATION

The  Eucharist (Holy Mass) is the feast of reconciliation of humanity with God, following the atonement of the sins of the world by the sacrifice of Jesus's death on the Cross. The participation of the Christians in the Holy Mass is their response to God's love and their desire for the grace to share that love with their neighbors. The Holy Mass is, therefore, the feast of love, forgiveness, generosity and sacrifice.

FEAST OF MULTIPLICATION

The Eucharist (Holy Mass) is the feast of multiplication. It is the source of divine providence and abundant multiplication of God's blessings. Whatever is offered to God at the Holy Mass - talent, goods, skills, time, service, money, prayer - is always multiplied to benefit the kingdom of God, those who make the sacrifice offerings and those for the sacrifices are made.

SOURCE OF LIFE

The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is the source of life. Christ who is present in the Holy Eucharist is the source of vitality, of all life and of eternal life. (John 1:4; Leviticus 17:11; John 6:51-56). Thus Holy Communion nourishes and sustains both the Church, as the body of Christ, and every Christian who receives it (John 6:53-57). Every Christian ought to desire the Eucharist and try to fulfill the conditions required to receive it, - and not just occasionally, but everyday.

SOURCE OF GRACE

The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is the source of graces. The Eucharist is the basic Sacrament and is the source and strength of the other sacraments. It is the source of all graces because God's grace comes through Jesus (John 1:17, 2 Corinthians 8:9) - and he is the essence in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is also the source and the strength of the other Sacraments of the Church because, the sacraments are the external signs of internal graces from God. So they receive their vitality from the Body of Christ.

RELIEF  AND STRENGTH

The Eucharist (Blessed Sacrament) is the source of relief and strength. In adoring Christ in the Blessed Sacrament we may obtain relief from our burdens (Mathew 11:28); get consolation, peace of mind, strength and fulfillment in life (Matthew 6:35). The regular adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is, therefore, a veritable means of healing, restoration, sanctification, fortification, benediction and spiritual fulfillment.

SOURCE OF ENLIGHTENMENT

The Eucharist (Blessed Sacrament) is the source of personal revelation, inspiration  and spiritual enlightenment. When we adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament - surrendering to him the self, problems, worries and plans  - he would direct us by different  ways  on the right things to do.

HONOR THE EUCHARIST

Now that the Eucharist is unveiled - though only God can fully unveil it to anyone - we should stop despising Jesus in the Blessed Eucharist (Isaiah 53:3). For it is by his sacrifice that we are saved; we are healed in his Blood  and restored in his Body (Isaiah 53:5). Furthermore, no one should take Holy Communion in a state of sin or impurity (of mind, heart, or soul). The consequence of this sacrilege may be grievous and irreversible (John 13:26-27, 1 Corinthians 11:26-30).

Thought of the Week

There is nothing that lasts more than love - in the face of trial, the only thing that does not fail is love;  in the face of danger, the only thing that does not fear is love; and in the face of usage, the only thing that does not wear is llove. Love is the one thing that we can give it all, and still have  it all  - love.!
